Cycling
From alpine passes to ancient coastal paths — the mountains on two wheels.
Cycling in the mountains opens up a completely different relationship with the landscape. The effort of the climb — the burning legs, the controlled breathing, the metronomic rhythm of the pedal stroke — creates a heightened state of awareness. And then the descent: the wind, the speed, the unfolding landscape, the reward for the work. At Red Fox Trails, our cycling programme covers everything from gentle E-bike tours through Swiss valleys to serious road cycling on the legendary passes of the Tour de France.
E-Bike Adventures
The E-bike has transformed mountain cycling. High-quality electric-assist bikes — we use premium Bosch Performance-powered models — mean that the gradients that would defeat most recreational cyclists become thoroughly achievable. Our E-bike tours are designed to maximize the experience while minimizing the suffering: we use the motor to climb efficiently, then descend on scenic trails that reveal the landscape from angles impossible by road.
Our Swiss E-Bike Circuit is our most popular cycling offering: 7 days connecting the Bernese Oberland, the Valais, and the Graubünden via high-altitude trails and valley paths, staying in traditional Swiss mountain hotels. The daily distances (40-70km) are comfortably within reach for most riders, and the scenery — the Aletsch Glacier, the Matterhorn, the Engadin lakes — is simply extraordinary.
Switzerland has over 9,000km of dedicated cycling routes, maintained to a standard that puts most other countries to shame. Many of these routes follow old paths — former cart tracks, canal towpaths, and river valleys — that provide a fascinating historical dimension to the riding.
Road Cycling: The Great Passes
For experienced road cyclists, the Alpine passes are the ultimate challenge. The Col du Galibier, the Col d'Izoard, the Stelvio Pass, the Grosse Scheidegg — these are names that appear in the lexicon of the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, and climbing them is an experience of rare intensity. We offer supported road cycling tours that tackle a curated selection of these legendary climbs, with a support vehicle carrying spare bikes, tools, and refreshments, and a guide on the road at all times.
Mountain Biking & Flow Trails
The mountains of Central Europe have invested heavily in mountain bike infrastructure, and the results are spectacular. Zermatt has 20+ trails ranging from beginner flow tracks to technical enduro lines, all accessible by cable car from the village. The Saalbach-Hinterglemm bike resort in Austria has over 400km of marked trails. We offer guided mountain bike days in both locations, with experienced biking guides who can coach technique as well as navigate the trail networks.
The Camí de Cavalls by Bike
One of our most unique cycling offerings is the Camí de Cavalls in Menorca — the 185km coastal circuit of the island, completed by mountain bike over 5 days. The terrain varies from smooth coastal paths to rocky single-track, and the combination of physical effort, extraordinary coastal scenery, and spontaneous swimming stops makes this one of the most joyful cycling experiences we offer.
