Europe's landscapes are more than spectacular scenery and often conceal unexpected treasures, in the form of historical, cultura and gastronomical heritage.
At Red Fox Trails, our cultural journeys are designed to bring this heritage to life. Whether exploring medieval towns, ancient monasteries, mountain communities, or enduring local traditions, each itinerary reveals the stories behind Europe's regions. While our dedicated cultural tours place history and heritage at the heart of the experience, cultural discoveries are also woven into many of our hiking tours, adding another dimension to every journey.
What Makes our Cultural Journeys Different
Our cultural journeys are rooted in the landscapes we explore, revealing the history, architecture, and traditions that have shaped them over centuries. On the Lakes of Switzerland Tour, we combine alpine hiking with visits to Lucerne's beautifully preserved Old Town and Meggenhorn Castle, where the richly decorated neo-Renaissance interiors offer a glimpse into 19th-century Swiss aristocratic life.
On our Crete Tour, we visit remote Byzantine monasteries and Minoan archeological sites.
Food and wine are an equally important part of the story. In Italy's Aosta Valley, we visit a high-altitude alpeggio (alpine pasture), where cows grazing on dozens of mountain herbs and wildflowers produce cheeses of remarkable depth and complexity. In the Dolomites, traditional rifugi serve Ladin specialties such as Schlutzkrapfen and Speck, prepared according to recipes handed down through generations.
In Crete and Slovenia, we visit family-run wineries producing wines from indigenous grape varieties that were once close to disappearing and are now being revived by a new generation of winemakers. On Madeira, the island's subtropical climate and centuries of winemaking tradition create wines unlike any other in Europe.
And for those drawn to Europe's historic cities, Poland's royal capital of Kraków offers centuries of history within easy reach of the High Tatras. Wander medieval streets, Renaissance courtyards, and Baroque churches before returning to the mountain wilderness little more than an hour away.
Many of the food traditions we encounter on our cultural tours are recognized by the EU as "Protected Designations of Origin" — an acknowledgment that these products are inseparable from the landscapes and communities that produce them.
