Difficulty & Fitness

The Essential Tyrol Tour is suitable for hikers of all abilities. Thanks to an extensive network of lifts in the Stubaital, even leisurely walkers can experience glaciers and spectacular high-alpine scenery up close. The upper reaches of the Zillertal are more remote and require longer hikes, but those who prefer a gentler pace can enjoy scenic valley walks through picturesque hamlets, waterfalls, and alpine meadows. Around Kitzbühel, an exceptional network of trails and lifts offers hiking opportunities for everyone, from beginners to experienced hikers.

Where to Stay

Tyrolean hotels are famous for their warm hospitality. We stay in family-run hotels with distinctive regional character.

Description

Tyrol is widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of mountain tourism and the cradle of Austrian alpinism. To hike here is to follow in the footsteps of the pioneers of mountaineering, exploring a landscape that has shaped the history of alpinism for more than a century.

Our Essential Tyrol Tour begins in the Stubaital, a picturesque valley where traditional villages give way to rugged peaks rising above 3,400 meters (11,000 feet) crowned by glaciers. Sheer mountain walls, dramatic limestone towers, and dense evergreen forests recall the landscapes of the Dolomites, but with a distinctly Austrian character. The Zillertal will impress even seasoned hikers with the remarkable variety of its scenery. Beyond dark spruce forests, waterfalls, and rocky cliffs lie high alpine pastures where cattle graze beneath imposing glaciers. Along the way, welcoming mountain huts serve traditional Tyrolean specialties such as Gröstl and Kaiserschmarrn, adding an authentic culinary dimension to the journey.

In Kitzbühel, we hike the scenic trails around the Kitzbüheler Horn and stand close to the powerful Sintersbach Waterfall. The gentle, emerald-green mountains of North Tyrol provide a magnificent natural balcony from which to take in sweeping and unforgettable views.

Tyrol truly is the heartland of Austrian alpine culture — a land of painted farmhouses, onion-domed churches, and some of the most memorable high-altitude walking in the Eastern Alps.
