Białowieża Forest is extraordinary: a UNESCO World Heritage site and the last large remnant of the primeval lowland forest that once stretched across the European plain from the Atlantic to the Urals. Some of the trees here are over 500 years old, their trunks wider than a person's armspan, standing in a multi-layered canopy that filters the light to a cathedral-like green glow.

Walking in the strict reserve section of the forest requires a licensed guide — a requirement that limits visitor numbers and maintains the forest's integrity. Cristiano works with local specialist guides who hold the necessary permits and whose knowledge of the forest is encyclopedic. The experience is genuinely unlike any other walk in Europe.

The forest floor is a tapestry of fungi, mosses, ferns, and wildflowers that shifts with the seasons. Autumn is particularly magical, when the forest turns gold and the fungi displays are at their most spectacular. The great natural disturbances — windthrow, flooding, and fire — that shaped the forest for millennia are visible everywhere as fallen giants slowly decompose and new trees rise from the debris.
