The gentler, green-carpeted hills of the Slovak and Polish Beskids offer superb ridge walking through unspoilt villages and ancient beech forests.

The Beskydy and Bieszczady mountain ranges of Slovakia and southern Poland represent the Carpathians at their most accessible and most serene. Unlike the rocky High Tatras, these are mountains of deep beech and fir forest, rolling green meadows, and ridgelines that unfold in long, leisurely curves with views that seem to go on forever.

The Slovak Beskydy protect some of the last intact primeval forest in Central Europe. Walking here on quiet trails means encountering Europe's largest lynx population, spotting black storks by mountain streams, and passing through Wallachian shepherd villages that have changed little in a century. The region is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

In the Polish Bieszczady, the open grassy ridges called połoniny — a landscape type also found in the Ukrainian Carpathians — create an almost Tibetan sense of space. Wild horses graze freely on these high meadows, and the walking is wonderfully underpopulated even in summer. A perfect antidote to the crowded alpine mainstream.

Tour Highlights

  • Hike the Tatra-Fatra ridge trail in the Slovak Carpathians
  • Summit Veľký Choč (1,611 m) in the Little Fatra — outstanding views with minimal crowds
  • Walk through the Slovenský raj (Slovak Paradise) on wooden boardwalks above gorges
  • Explore the Pieniny canyon by foot and traditional wooden raft on the Dunajec river
  • Discover the ancient beech forests of the East Carpathians on the Ukrainian border

Difficulty & Fitness

Slovak Carpathians trails are varied — the Tatra foothills are gentle while the Malá Fatra and Slovenský raj require more agility and head for heights. The wooden boardwalks in Slovak Paradise involve ladders and chains.

Where to Stay

Slovak mountain tourism is excellent value — comfortable pensions and mountain chalets are significantly cheaper than their Austrian or Swiss equivalents. Žilina and Poprad make good logistical bases.
