Crete
Samaria Gorge
Europe's longest gorge — 16 km of dramatic descent through towering limestone walls to the Libyan Sea. One of the great classic walks of the Mediterranean.
The Samaria Gorge cuts through the White Mountains of western Crete for 16 km, dropping from the high Omalos plateau at 1,250 m to the coast at Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. It is the longest gorge in Europe and one of the most dramatic — the limestone walls at the famous Sideroportes (Iron Gates) narrowing to just 3 metres wide while soaring 300 metres overhead.
The walk takes 4–6 hours depending on pace, descending through changing vegetation zones: Cretan mountain pine and cypress on the high plateau, ancient plane trees and oleander in the lower gorge, and the wild Cretan sun at the southern coast. The Cretan wild goat (kri-kri), endemic to this area, is often spotted on the cliff faces.
We combine the gorge walk with an exploration of the surrounding White Mountains (Lefka Ori) — the high plateau walks above Omalos and the quieter gorges of Imbros and Aradena, which offer similar drama with far fewer visitors. A boat from Agia Roumeli to the beautiful coastal village of Loutro completes the experience perfectly.
