White Mountains Circuit

The Lefka Ori massif of western Crete is a world apart — a high limestone plateau of stark beauty, rare endemic plants, and sweeping views to Africa on clear days.

The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) of western Crete rise to 2,453 m and dominate the landscape of Chania province. In winter they are genuinely snow-capped; in summer they are a high karst desert of bare white limestone, sparse vegetation, and extraordinary isolation. Walking here feels like being in another world — not the lush green Crete of postcards, but something older and more elemental.

The E4 long-distance trail crosses the massif from Xyloskalo on the Omalos plateau to the village of Askifou — a multi-day traverse that is one of the great mountain challenges of the Greek islands. We tailor this to ability level, offering both the full crossing and shorter day explorations from valley bases.

The endemic plants of the White Mountains are remarkable: over 50 species found nowhere else on Earth, including the Cretan endemic Zelkova abelicea, a relict tree from the Tertiary period. The botanically-minded walker will find this mountain range endlessly fascinating.
