Cyprus
Troodos Mountains
The pine-forested heart of Cyprus rises above the Mediterranean heat. Byzantine painted churches, traditional villages, and cedar forests await.
The Troodos massif occupies the centre of Cyprus, rising to 1,951 m at Mount Olympus (not to be confused with the Greek mountain of the same name). The mountains provide a cool, green escape from the island's famously hot summers, and their forests of black pine, cedar, and golden oak create an atmosphere entirely unlike the Mediterranean coastline a few hundred metres below.
The Troodos contain a remarkable concentration of UNESCO-listed painted Byzantine churches — ten churches decorated between the 11th and 16th centuries with frescoes of extraordinary quality and completeness. Walking between villages to visit these churches is one of the most culturally rich experiences Cyprus offers.
The Caledonia Trail leads through the Troodos State Forest to the highest waterfall in Cyprus, while the Atalante Trail circles the summit of Olympus through dense pine forest. We combine walking with visits to the wine villages of Omodos and Lefkara, where traditional lace-making and local wine production continue today.
