Poland's most beloved mountain lake sits in a glacial cirque surrounded by the highest peaks of the Polish Tatras. A classic walk accessible to all.
Morskie Oko — "the Eye of the Sea" — is Poland's largest and most celebrated mountain lake, filling a deep glacial cirque at 1,395 m beneath the dramatic walls of Rysy and Mięguszowieckie Szczyty. The walk from Palenica Białczańska is one of Poland's most popular, and deservedly so — a steady climb through forest and alpine meadows to a lake that genuinely takes the breath away.
For those wanting more solitude, we explore the less-visited lakes of the Pięć Stawów Polskich (Five Polish Lakes) cirque above Morskie Oko, an extraordinary high alpine plateau filled with turquoise lakes that few international visitors ever reach. The Szpiglasowy Pass connecting the two cirques is one of the finest short ridge walks in the Tatras.
We also explore the Slovak side — the valley of Mengusovská dolina leads to the Popradské pleso mountain lake under the Rysy massif, offering a perspective that complements the Polish approaches.

Difficulty & Fitness
The walk to Morskie Oko from the road terminus at Palenica Białczańska is 9 km each way and accessible to most hikers with moderate fitness. The extension to Czarny Staw is steeper and more demanding.

The Schronisko PTTK hut directly at Morskie Oko offers bunkroom accommodation with extraordinary views — booking ahead is essential in summer. Zakopane is the main resort base with a wide range of hotels.
