High Tatras Ridge Walk
The backbone of the Tatras — a dramatic high-level traverse along the Polish-Slovak border ridge with views across two countries.
The High Tatras are the only true alpine mountain range in Central Europe — compact, dramatic, and rising abruptly from the surrounding lowlands to peaks over 2,600 m. The ridge that marks the Polish-Slovak border is the spine of this range, and walking along it offers one of the most exhilarating high-level experiences in the region.
Key sections include the Orla Perc (Eagle's Path) on the Polish side — a challenging but rewarding ridge traverse with steel cables and ladders — and the Slovak Red Trail connecting the major peaks from Slavkovský štít to Rysy. The contrast between the two national parks (Polish Tatrzański and Slovak Tatranský) on either side of the ridge is fascinating.
We base ourselves in the Slovak resort of Starý Smokovec and the Polish mountain town of Zakopane, taking the best walking from both sides. The mountain refuges (schroniska in Polish, chaty in Slovak) are a highlight — atmospheric huts with great food and genuine mountain culture.

Difficulty & Fitness
The Magistrala ridge trail requires a full day and good fitness; exposure is significant in places. The summit routes are more demanding and require experience on rocky alpine terrain.
Where to Stay
Slovak High Tatras chaty (mountain chalets) provide basic but welcoming accommodation at elevation. Starý Smokovec and Tatranská Lomnica are the main resort towns with a full range of hotel options.
