Sóller Valley & Villages

The orange-scented valley of Sóller, linked to Palma by a century-old wooden tram, and the stone villages of the foothills at their most authentic.

The Sóller Valley is one of the most beautiful rural landscapes in the Balearic Islands — a broad, sheltered basin filled with orange and lemon trees, enclosed by the limestone walls of the Tramuntana and open to the sea at Port de Sóller. The valley has been protected by its geography from the mass tourism that transformed much of Mallorca's coast, and walking here still feels like discovering a genuinely authentic corner of the Mediterranean.

The network of old mule paths (camins de ferradura) connecting the valley villages — Fornalutx, Biniaraix, and the terraced farmsteads of the Barranc de Biniaraix gorge — provides some of the most enjoyable and accessible walking on the island. The Biniaraix gorge itself, ascending through natural stone stairways past waterfalls and old olive mills to the high Cuber Reservoir, is a Mallorca classic.

We time our visits to Sóller to include the weekly market in the beautiful modernista main square, and always spend an evening at the port watching the fishing boats return as the sun sets behind the Tramuntana peaks — a perfect Mallorcan scene.
