Mallorca
Serra de Tramuntana
Mallorca's UNESCO-listed mountain range runs along the northwest coast — a dramatic landscape of limestone peaks, olive groves, and cliff-edge footpaths above the sea.
The Serra de Tramuntana is the backbone of Mallorca — a 90 km chain of limestone mountains running along the northwest coast from Andratx to Pollença. The range was inscribed as a UNESCO Cultural Landscape in 2011 in recognition of its unique combination of rugged mountain terrain and a centuries-old system of water management built from terraced fields, dry-stone walls, and snow-ice pits.
The GR221 — the Ruta de Pedra en Sec (Dry Stone Route) — is the principal long-distance trail, running the length of the range and linking a series of restored mountain refuges. Walking this route means passing through olive groves that have been cultivated since Roman times, ascending to the highest point of Puig Major (1,445 m), and descending to fishing coves on the cliffs above the Mediterranean.
Sóller, accessible by vintage tram from Palma, is the ideal base for Tramuntana walking. The valley is one of Mallorca's most beautiful — a bowl of orange and lemon orchards ringed by limestone peaks, with a brilliant modernista main square and the port's seafood restaurants just a tram ride away.
