Southern Coves & Turquoise Water

The southern coast of Menorca holds some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean — pristine white sand in sheltered limestone coves reached on foot.

The southern coast of Menorca is defined by a series of calas — sheltered limestone coves with impossibly white sand and water that shifts from turquoise near the shore to deep blue further out. Many of these coves are accessible only on foot along the Camí de Cavalls, which means they remain undeveloped and uncrowded even in the peak summer months when the more accessible northern beaches fill with tourists.

Our southern coves program focuses on a selection of the most beautiful and least-known calas: Macarella and Macarelleta (a pair of arching bays considered among the finest beaches in Europe), Trebalúger (accessible only by boat or a 45-minute walk), and the long, wild beach of Son Bou — 2.5 km of sand backed by early Christian basilica ruins.

We walk the connecting sections of the Camí de Cavalls between these beaches, picnicking on the sand and snorkelling in the crystalline water. Evening returns to Ciutadella, Menorca's historic capital, where we eat in the harbour-side restaurants as the sun sets over the Balearic Sea. A perfect combination of mild walking and Mediterranean pleasure.

Difficulty & Fitness

The southern coves walks involve gentle to moderate terrain — mostly flat paths with occasional rocky descents to the beach. The longest walks cover 8–12 km and are suitable for most fitness levels.

Where to Stay

Ciutadella on the west coast is the most atmospheric base for southern coves access — a beautiful walled city with excellent restaurants. Agrotourisme farmhouses between the coves offer complete seclusion.
