Slovenia is one of Europe's best-kept secrets: a small country with a big alpine heart. The Julian Alps in the northwest corner form the centrepiece of Triglav National Park, named after the country's highest peak (2,864 m) and the symbol on the Slovenian flag. The park covers nearly 4% of Slovenia's entire territory and contains some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Central Europe.
Lake Bled, with its clifftop castle and island church, is Slovenia's most iconic image — but the country has much more to offer. The Soča River valley runs emerald-green through narrow limestone canyons. The Vrsic Pass, the highest mountain pass in Slovenia, offers panoramic views across the Julian Alps. Kobarid (Caporetto) holds both a moving WWI museum and trails across the former battlefields.
