Description
With more than 7,000 lakes scattered across its landscapes, Switzerland is a country shaped by water. This journey introduces you to its most iconic lakes, from the glacial amphitheater of Lake Oeschinen to the Mediterranean charm of Lakes Lugano and Maggiore. Along the way, discover the timeless beauty of Lake Lucerne, with its brilliant turquoise waters, storybook castles, charming medieval villages, and graceful mountains rising directly from the lake's shores.
We explore what many consider one of the Alps' finest trails: the spectacular Heuberg Loop above Lake Oeschinen. Glaciers, ancient moraines, towering limestone cliffs soaring more than 1,000 feet above the water, and the lake's impossibly turquoise reflections accompany us throughout the hike.
We also board one of Switzerland's most scenic railways: the historic cogwheel train to Mount Rigi. Climbing through rolling farmland, evergreen forests, and flower-filled meadows dotted with grazing cows, the journey culminates on a panoramic summit overlooking the lakes and peaks of Central Switzerland.
In Lugano and Locarno, hiking becomes as much a culinary experience as an outdoor adventure. We wander the lush shores of Lakes Lugano and Maggiore before enjoying meals in family-run restaurants serving fresh regional cuisine infused with Italian flavors. Yet the Mediterranean spirit extends far beyond the food. It lingers in the warm air, the palm-lined promenades, and the relaxed rhythm of lakeside life. As you sit by the water after a refreshing swim, you may find yourself wondering whether you've quietly crossed into Italy.
