Our Hiking & Cultural Tours are small-group departures with flexible dates, a published itinerary, and accommodation carefully selected by us. You can book a place as a solo traveller, a couple, or a group of friends. Our tours are built with a simple mission in mind: to show you the immense natural and cultural richness of the European outdoors.

How a Group Departure Works

Each tour operates during specific months of the year, with some flexibility around the exact departure dates. As we may run several departures of the same tour within a month, we don't publish fixed dates. Instead, get in touch and let us know your preferred dates, and we'll do our best to accommodate them.

On each tour page, you will find detailed information about the length of the tour, the months in which it operates, and its difficulty. You travel with a small group of people who have chosen the same route for many of the same reasons. Groups are deliberately kept small: it keeps the pace conversational, allows the guide to adapt the day to the people in front of them, and helps us remain welcome in the small places we visit.

An experienced hiking guide leads the group every day, and a second guide joins whenever there are more than four participants.

A Typical Day - Hiking Tours

Our philosophy is that a successful day of hiking starts the evening before. Before dinner, we meet and brief you on the next day’s hike: where we are going, what the weather is doing, and what to expect underfoot.

Mornings begin with a proper breakfast. Most walking days run between four and seven hours, including stops, at a pace set by the group rather than the clock. Lunch is usually eaten on the trail or at a mountain hut.

Evenings are unstructured. Dinner is included in your tour fee, and we usually eat together, sharing stories from the day and getting to know each other. If you prefer some time to yourself, separate dinners can also be arranged. We generally have an early night so that everyone is fresh for the following day.

A Typical Day - Cultural Tours

Much like our Hiking Tours, the Cultural Tours follow a day-by-day itinerary; the difference is that here we blend hiking with sightseeing. Generally speaking, we hike in the morning and dedicate the afternoon to the cultural side of the day — a village, a castle, a chapel, a museum, or a producer who has agreed to open their doors to us.

This is what separates these departures from a simple walking holiday. Alpine valleys have their own languages, building traditions, cheeses, festivals, and long memories, and much of this is rarely visible from the trail alone.

Depending on the region, a tour might include a tasting with a small producer, a guided visit to a historic centre, a conversation with a hut keeper whose family has held the licence for generations, or a stop at a site that reveals why a particular mountain pass mattered for a thousand years. Our guides are local, and the introductions are real ones.

The cultural stops are not fillers for bad weather. They are planned into the route, which is one reason our days cover slightly less ground than a pure hiking itinerary of the same length.

Choosing Your Level

Every tour page states its difficulty, its daily distances, and the terrain you will be crossing, so you can judge the fit before you enquire. Departures range from gentle valley and mid-altitude routes suitable for anyone in ordinary good health, up to demanding days with sustained ascent and exposed sections. If you are between two levels, write to us and describe your recent hiking experience — we would far rather place you on the right departure than sell you the wrong one.

What Is Included

Your reservation includes guiding for every day of the tour, accommodation for all the nights listed in the itinerary, and any mountain transport the route depends on — cable cars, mountain railways, and local buses — all pre-booked so no one has to queue for tickets. Breakfasts and dinners are always included, while lunches and snacks for the day are left to you.

In general, we cover everything stated explicitly on each tour page.Travel insurance covering mountain rescue is required of every guest and is not included; the General & Logistics page explains what that cover needs to contain.

Booking a Place

Use the enquiry form on the tour page you are interested in, telling us the dates you have in mind, how many of you there are, and anything about fitness, pace, or dietary needs that would help us plan. We reply personally — not with an automated confirmation — and we will tell you plainly if we think a different departure would suit you better.

Prefer your own dates, your own pace, or to travel only with the people you arrived with? Every itinerary here can also be arranged privately, and our multi-day treks are offered as private experiences exclusively. See Private Tours.
