Białowieża Forest is the most extraordinary natural site in Europe — and one of the least visited. Straddling the border between Poland and Belarus, this is the last remnant of the vast primeval forest that once covered the entire European continent from the Atlantic coast to the Ural Mountains. It has been growing and evolving continuously since the last Ice Age — over 10,000 years — making it a living archive of European natural history.

The forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Biosphere Reserve. Its trees are not managed for timber production; they grow, die, and decompose in their own time, creating the extraordinary biodiversity that defines a true primeval ecosystem. Ancient oaks with trunks over 6 metres in circumference, linden trees over 500 years old, ash and hornbeam reaching 40 metres — these are the cathedrals of the forest, places where the passage of time is measured in centuries rather than years.

The European Bison

A European bison in Bialowieza Forest — A European Bison (Żubr) — the heaviest land animal in Europe — in its natural habitat in Białowieża Forest.

The European Bison (Bison bonasus) — known in Polish as the Żubr — is the largest land animal in Europe and the icon of Białowieża. It was hunted to extinction in the wild in 1919 but was saved from complete disappearance by a remarkable international breeding programme using 12 zoo animals. Today, thanks to this effort, over 6,000 bison roam free in Europe — the majority in and around Białowieża.

We track bison with expert local guides who know the forest and its inhabitants intimately. The best time for sightings is early morning in the meadows at the forest's edge, when the bison emerge from the trees to graze. A close encounter with a European Bison — an animal of immense, prehistoric power — is one of the most moving wildlife experiences available anywhere in Europe.

The European Bison can weigh up to 900kg and reach a shoulder height of 1.8 metres. Despite its size, it is remarkably agile — capable of jumping over obstacles 3 metres high and running at 55km/h. Our guides maintain a respectful distance at all times.

The Strictly Protected Zone

At the heart of the Polish side of the forest is the Strictly Protected Zone — a 4,747-hectare area that can only be entered with a licensed guide. This is where the forest is at its most ancient and most wild: trees that have fallen and decomposed where they stand, fungi of extraordinary variety covering every rotting log, and a silence that is genuinely unnerving after the noise of the modern world.

We enter the Strictly Protected Zone on our second day, spending 4-5 hours moving slowly through the ancient stands. Our guide points out the indicators of age and ecological health: the density of dead wood, the variety of fungi species, the presence of woodpecker holes in ancient trees. A day in this zone changes permanently how you understand the word "forest."

Wildlife Beyond the Bison

The bison is the most famous resident of Białowieża, but the forest is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife. Wolves and lynx — the forest's top predators — are rarely seen but their tracks are everywhere. We have camera trap footage of both species from the areas we patrol. Wild boar root through the forest floor in family groups. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded, including the White-backed Woodpecker and the Three-toed Woodpecker — both globally rare species that depend on old-growth forest with abundant dead wood.

Our Białowieża tours are 4-5 days long, allowing time to explore both the Polish and Belarusian sides of the forest (we arrange Belarusian visas for our guests), to attend a lecture by a local forest ecologist, and to spend two full mornings on bison tracking excursions. The experience is genuinely transformative.
