Sentier de la Forêt Primaire

Białowieża Forest is extraordinary: a UNESCO World Heritage site and the last large remnant of the primeval lowland forest that once stretched across the European plain from the Atlantic to the Urals. Some of the trees here are over 500 years old, their trunks wider than a person's armspan, standing in a multi-layered canopy that filters the light to a cathedral-like green glow. Autumn is particularly magical, when the forest turns gold and the fungi displays are at their most spectacular. The great natural disturbances — windthrow, flooding, and fire — that shaped the forest for millennia are visible everywhere as fallen giants slowly decompose and new trees rise from the debris.

The approach is on foot, moving slowly and quietly through the forest undergrowth. The guide reads the signs: fresh hoof prints in the mud, trampled vegetation, the distinctive musky smell of the herd. And then — often without warning — the forest opens and there they are: a group of 10, 15, 20 bison, grazing peacefully in the early light, completely indifferent to our presence. On this adventure, although rarer and far more elusive, it is also possible to encounter European elk (moose), wolves, bears, or lynx.

Walking in the strict reserve section of the forest requires a licensed guide — a requirement that limits visitor numbers and maintains the forest's integrity. Cristiano works with local specialist guides who hold the necessary permits and whose knowledge of the forest is encyclopedic. The experience is genuinely unlike any other walk in Europe.

Alongside hiking, wildlife watching, and exploring the forest itself, we also dedicate one day to discovering the cultural richness of this remote corner of eastern Poland. We visit picturesque villages with beautifully painted wooden houses and admire the brightly coloured, centuries-old Orthodox churches.
